My bestie of many years, Miss Sassy, celebrated birthday number thirty one yesterday. As always, she and her fiance Comic Book Fan put on a great party. He grilled up half a salmon, she roasted potatoes, and a good time was had by all. There may or may not have been a best of the ’90’s dance party in their basement on the red sculpted shag carpet: I don’t think anyone who was present will be talking about that one.
Since her birthday rolls around but once a year, I made Miss Sassy an extra- special cake. As she requested, it was a French vanilla cake with a blueberry cheesecake filling. What I didn’t tell her was what I planned to do to the outside. Here’s a cellphone photo of the finished product:

Miss Sassy loves all things blue, so I made her this rose cake in three shades of her favourite colour. I borrowed the idea from the fabulous blog I Am Baker: you can see the original post here. What you can’t see in the photo is that the inside of the cake is the same colour as the medium blue roses. I thought I snapped a photo of a cut piece, but there was not one on my phone when I checked today. You’ll just have to take my word for it. Since the blueberry cheesecake filling came out a deep purple, the inside was just as pretty as the outside.
My hands are slowly improving since I started my new job, which is making it easier for me to work in my kitchen and turn out delicious things. Stay tuned for some of the loveliness I’m planning over the next little while.
Cake: it’s one of the best things in life, no?
